Would I have understood it? No, because it can't be understood.
Do I view those 20 years of time as a complete waste of time? No, because that's how reality manifested through this particular body/mind.
One of the reasons I post on the forum is to potentially save someone else twenty years of thinking by explaining that there is a more effective way of interacting with reality for finding answers to existential questions.
I grew up in a culture where nobody could answer my questions or explain to me how to find the answers. I asked many specific questions along the way, but no one understood what I was asking because everyone was lost in a kind of consensual meta-reality trance. At that time there were almost no books about non-duality and virtually no American teachers.
Today, things are quite different. There are hundreds of books and hundreds of teachers available, so the odds of hearing about non-duality and/or an explanation about how the consensus trance arises and can be escaped are much better.
For most people mind is a dominant taskmaster. This body/mind enjoys suggesting how to escape the dominance of mind, discover the freedom of being THIS, and allow mind to function effectively as a useful servant.
