The sage never gave him any formal teaching, and the man grew increasingly frustrated. After several months, the man could stand it no longer, and he said to the sage, "I've been here for six months, and you've never taught me anything. When are you going to teach me everything you know?" The sage looked surprised and replied, "How can you say such a thing? When you asked where the sleeping quarters were, didn't I tell you? When it was time to eat, didn't I join you for a meal? When we cleaned the dishes afterwards, didn't I wipe them dry after you washed them? What is it that you don't understand?"
