Important note: All the posts on this blog were written by Bob Harwood (AKA 'zendancer') on the forum spiritualteachers.proboards.com. I have merely reposted a collection of them in blog format for the convenience of seekers. Some very small mods were made on occasion to make posts readable outside of the forum setting they were made in.

What is happening?

"Nothing much" sounds like some sort of judgment is being made. We could just as well conclude, "A lot is happening," but this, too, would add something unnecessary. I suggest looking at what is happening without any judgment at all and without any verbal commentary. If we simply look, we see "what is." If we cognize what we see, then we think "fingers typing, eyes reading, voices talking....nothing much." Try looking without any cognition at all. Look without knowing.

In some traditions people are initially asked to cognize specifically what they see as a first step of becoming conscious of "what is." They think "thoughts arising," "feet walking," hands combing hair," etc, but this is sort of like breath-counting or mantra repetition--an easy way to interrupt the incessant thoughts that create the consensus trance. Even with this basic practice people are encouraged not to judge what they see because it adds another layer of thought.

So, if you look around, what do you see? There's no need to name anything or indulge in any commentary. Just look. You don't see "fingers typing" or "words on a computer screen" or "nothing much;" you see ___________.

Stay with ______________and don't expect anything. Cheers.
