Important note: All the posts on this blog were written by Bob Harwood (AKA 'zendancer') on the forum spiritualteachers.proboards.com. I have merely reposted a collection of them in blog format for the convenience of seekers. Some very small mods were made on occasion to make posts readable outside of the forum setting they were made in.

What is enlightenment?

A direct answer to the question is, "Would you like a cup of tea?"

An indirect, intellectual, or explanatory answer would be, Enlightenment is the realization that the one seeking enlightenment does not exist, and that oneness is all there is (I am THAT)." When the structures of thought supporting a sense of selfhood collapse, freedom ensues because there is no longer a separation between inside and outside or between self and other. Seeking comes to an end because the seeker has disappeared.

By the time this realization is attained, there is usually already a great deal of freedom from the mind, so that thoughts are no longer the dominant force in life. After enlightenment (except on this forum--LOL), there is usually non-abidance in mind. Whatever is happening in the present moment is the primary focus of one's attention. Life continues just as before but without the sense of a "me in here" looking at "a world out there" and without the incessantly reflective thoughts that usually revolve around selfhood. One knows what to do, and does what has to be done. Afterwards, s/he does the next thing that has to be done. Life is simple, ordinary, and "down-to-earth." Life is accepted as it is without resistance or expectation, and therefore one "goes with the flow." In short, it is psychologicaly easier to float downstream than to struggle upstream against the current.
